Humans already are robots. One of my favorite quotes by Aubrey de Grey is “the human body is a very complex machine.” Yes, we are complex, self replicating and self-repairing, but we are machines never-the-less. Look at yourself, look at your hands - they are a small part of an extremely complex apparatus that is able to accomplish all kinds of sophisticated actions. Vertebrate life forms are the most complex apparatus ever developed and no definition of a robot says that it has to be man made. So what if the current life forms were created by the trial-and-error process called evolution for over 4.7 billion years?!…

Mind Technologies’ Mind Mouse And Master Mind Thought-Controlled Software

by Socrates

Mind Technologies Inc is currently the software leader in thought controlled software applications. The company creates applications for the Emotiv EPOC neuro-headset, a revolutionary new personal interface for human-computer interaction. The Emotiv EPOC is a high resolution, neuro-signal acquisition and processing wireless neuro-headset which uses a set of sensors to tune into electric signals produced by the brain to detect player thoughts, feelings and expressions and connects wirelessly to most PCs. In essence, it is a brain-computer interface technology which reads the electrical impulses of your brain. Since every thought that we have has a different neuron firing pattern, with the help of EEG technology and the latest from the growing field of cognitive mapping, we can capture the electrical impulse, read it with the headset and convert it into a software command. Currently Mind Technologies Inc has 3 applications [...]

This video is the full profile interview of controversial genomics scientist J. Craig Venter. It is only 13 min long but covers a great deal of issues surrounding Craig Venter’s persona and work such as: his project of sequencing the first complete human genome, his anti-establishment and arguably arrogant behavior, his religious beliefs (or lack thereof), the designing and creation of the first synthetic species and its implications. Regenerative Medicine And Gambling: Is Longer Life Of Greater Value?

by Kieran Griffith
Thumbnail image for Regenerative Medicine And Gambling: Is Longer Life Of Greater Value?

A funny thing happened to me when I first heard of the SENS Foundation and their program to develop strategies that will make it possible to live indefinitely. The day before, if you had asked me to take a free ride on NASA’s Space Shuttle I would have accepted with elation. But when I fully realized that I might live a thousand years (provided that I don’t die in an accident) I realized I would only want to go on a Russian Soyuz Spacecraft, which is far safer and has not had a fatal accident in 39 years. The Shuttle is reusable but its R & D budget was cut in half by President Nixon, so the final design did not get an emergency escape system. Given that there is a strong probability that I may live longer than originally [...]

Today I am very happy to have the Eyeborg Rob Spence as my guest on Singularity 1 on 1. (As usually, you can listen to or download the audio above, or scroll down to see the video recording of the interview in full.) Rob Spence is a Canadian director and producer who lives in Toronto. His work has appeared on Discovery, Vision, Space TV and the CBC for which he made the controversial documentary Let’s All Hate Toronto. Currently Rob is working on a documentary about how video and humanity intersect especially with regards to issues of surveillance and personal privacy. Who is Rob Spence? What is project Eyeborg? Take a one eyed film maker, an unemployed engineer, and a vision for something that’s never been done before and you have yourself the EyeBorg Project. Rob Spence, Kosta Grammatis and [...]

Glenn Martin’s 100,000 Dollar Flying Jetpack

by Socrates

In the videos below, Glenn Martin, the kiwi inventor of the Martin Flying Jetpack, first demonstrates the jetpack and then explains how it works.  This device runs on gasoline, can stay in the air for about half an hour, and can lift up to a 110kg. It has 2 joysticks and a flight control monitor and is supposed to be very easy to fly, with the average person requiring about 40 minutes or so of training. Sir Richard Branson and Larry Page are among the people who have tested the device already and have expessed a desire to purchase a unit as soon as the final prototype is finished. The Martin Flying Jetpack Specs: Engine: a single 2.0 liter V4 engine. Range: About 50km. (or about 30 min) Max Speed: 100km/h. Lift Capability: Pilot weight must be between 63.5kg and [...]

Fact or Fantasy - Is Today’s Science A Hard Act For The Sci Fi Writer To Follow?

by Peter Kinnon

On joining Singularity Weblog I signed up for the free e-book Accelerando. Which I will not, after all,  be downloading! It is in all probability an excellent example of its kind. So my rejection in no way a reflection of the quality of the book. It is simply that I discovered it to be a novel and (unless dosed very heavily with humor a la Douglas Adams) I just don’t read Sci Fi any more. You see, I am an old guy. Having had a great thirst for books of all kinds from my boyhood right through to my early thirties I eventually became bored with fiction in general and SF in particular. All the while intrigued by works such as The Selfish Gene as well as the study of chemistry and the fun of fooling around with electronics, I [...]

Can Terraforming Venus Be The Solution To Population Growth?

by Kieran Griffith

It seems to me that Aubrey de Grey is not a big fan of one of the possible solutions to the spiraling population expansion of the human race. That solution is to move at least some of us to other planets. Admittedly, such ideas may look like total science fiction  and up to now have usually been focused on Mars. Thus today there are considerable numbers of serious people interested in terraforming the red planet. University professors, intellectuals and adventurers support the colonization idea because a one-way trip to Mars would be probably half as expensive as a full round-trip mission. Thus, it is reasoned that Martian colonies should be set up there from the beginning. (Before colonizing Mars, however, we ought to fully utilize remote places such as Antarctica, Northern Canada, and Siberia, since those are much easier to [...]
