It has been shown by the success of programs like the Dr. Oz show that television programs about things that are otherwise quite complicated can be made accessible and appealing to a wide variety of people with little or no education. One barrier, it is thought, in bringing the idea of the Singularity to the masses is that the subject matter is too complex for the average television viewer, and is not commercially appealing enough to generate a large enough audience. However, a successful television program could be just what's needed to bring the Singularity into mainstream and political awareness.

What are your thoughts on this? And what would be the steps in making this a reality?

A high-quality, well-researched, and balanced Singularity series is a great idea, IMO. But I doubt Kurzweil would have the time for it. Maybe someone else. Maybe Socrates has some ideas on making this a reality- he has a lot of experience with multi-media.

I have had ideas about turning Singularity 1 on 1 into a TV program or a YouTube Channel Program since day 1. However, since I have not figured out the business model yet, I have no incoming funds to accomplish it. The same problem remains generally with the blog and the site. Thus key to the long term survival of all of the above lies within finding a way to create cash flow so that those can stay up on their own feet and I can pay my bills too… Any ideas are welcome!

I agree CMStewart. It is a good idea. And many in the Singularity community have these skills. Unfortunately, many are also arrogant about it, thinking that the concept of the Singularity is beyond the average television viewer. It doesn't have to be. Star Trek had a huge audience. I think the first person to get their act together and make this idea a reality will really have an impact. If it's going to be something the mainstream knows about, there will be somethign of a television series about it. Its unavoidable. It's just a matter of when, I think.

Hmm . . how do start-ups get angel investors? Is that kind of thing still popular? I've heard other Singularity projects have angel investors . .

Right now we can't really get investors. Perhaps sponsors or advertisers but not investor because investors want to see cashflow as well as reasonable chance that they will get a reasonable return on their investment. I have a strong belief that my last 2 years were not in vain, but that is very different from having facts to convince angel investors… Will start looking for advertisers soon though. They will not take more space than Google Adsense but should bring more into the piggy bank.

The key to success is basically great content which attracts more and more visitors who comment and engage and participate on the site, the blog and the forum. The other side of the coin though is that it has to be self-sufficient economically and thus I have to find ways to generate revenue. So far the only things that I have implemented are adds — Google AdSense which make about 60$ per month or so and donations. I will start soliciting direct advertizement but, even if successful, those will not be sufficient. So, until I figure out the business model things will always be at risk…

Of course the last 2 years were not in vain! Bring on the advertisers!

That is not easy too but I'll make a considerable push towards accomplishing it… Plus, I will make sure it is no more obtrusive than currently. I have great and many ideas but they include also equipment and other people, who, unlike me, need to get paid

When do you find out about getting into Singularity University? There is a good potential to meet investors/sponsors there :)

Well, that is part of my grandiose evil plan… The results should be coming within the next couple of weeks. However, have in mind that I was applying in the last round for about 20 available spots with, from what I hear, somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 applicants. So my chance is something like one in one hundred mathematically speaking…

@Socrates @Nikki Would it be so surprising if somehow Singularity 1 on 1 turned out to be the start-up of the first mainstream TV program?

I agree, it's not a question of "if," but of "who."

Shows with interviews do really well when people are interested in the person being interviewed. But then shows like Oprah kind of break that rule because she can make you really interested in the topic and then bring on someone you've never heard of. So the 1 on 1 in its current form has more of a specialized interest, but the idea of interviews in general works very well for popular television.

Maybe it would be a good idea to recruit members from other forums online. What interests do singularity enthusiasts have in common? Might work to post a couple of threads on each forum and tell them about this site.

As far as I know there are no other Singularity Forums. You are experiencing a historical event! But getting more people here is a good idea…Maybe we could approach forums for each of the individual topics on here… nanotech, cryonics, robotics, etc.

No other Singularity forums? That's pretty amazing!

I agree- getting more people involved is a great idea. I'd also add that within fields which have comparatively little to do with the Singularity, there are amazingly insightful, intelligent, and creative people who would contribute immensely if they were educated about the Singularity.

As per request, there is a new section of the Forum called "Singularity in the mainstrem". I re-introduced this topic thread so that discussion could continue there
